CHROMATOGRAPHIA

Guidelines for reviewers

We are sometimes asked by new board members or external reviewers for advice about reviewing a manuscript and how detailed should the peer review be. For your convenience, please find below some essential points to look at.

    • Is the manuscript suitable for CHROMATOGRAPHIA?
    • A peer review should evaluate the novelty of the findings and the quality of the experimental or theoretical work. Flaws or artefacts in the work should be mentioned. Are the techniques used appropriate for the type of information sought?
    • Does the manuscript contain only simple and obvious extensions of previous work?
    • The authors should put their findings in the context of previous work on related topics. It would be helpful if the reviewer pointed out relevant published work not cited by the authors.
    • Does the manuscript contain enough information so that someone not very familiar with the specific details, equipment, software, etc. could obtain similar materials and repeat the work in their own laboratory, obtaining similar results?
    • The reviewer should point out errors in reasoning and mark sequences which lack clarity in expression. Are the conclusions justified by the evidence that has been presented?
    • The figures should be necessary and adequate and should not duplicate information that has already been presented in the text or in the tables. The figure captions should provide the necessary information.
    • The mentioning of typographical errors, problems with style or language corrections are useful but are not central to the review unless they are so pronounced as to make the paper difficult to understand. Often it is sufficient to mark on the review sheet: "Language not satisfactory". Format and style of the manuscript is checked by the Editorial Office.
    • The reviewers should give honest and helpful suggestions for improvements. If they are not familiar with the subject or if they have a personal reason or conflict of interest that would keep them from being objective they should return the manuscript to the office of CHROMATOGRAPHIA as soon as possible.
